Well folks, you can't say that I wasn't loyal to Dragonball Z -especially to Vegeta- but times change (in my case over a decade of loyalty) and a new anime has finally taken hold of my artistic and literary imagination: TIGER & BUNNY. Like the proverbial phoenix, I am born anew.
For those of you new to the series (and no doubt puzzling over the title) here is the YesAsia description: "Tiger & Bunny takes place in a futuristic world where people with superpowers co-exist with normal citizens, with some even becoming superheroes. These heroes, called NEXT, are featured on a reality television series, wearing advertisements for corporations, and compete against one another to accumulate points. The world is seen through the eyes of Kotetsu "Wild Tiger" Kaburagi, a veteran superhero, and Barnaby Brooks Jr., a young rookie that becomes Tiger's new partner. With conflicting values stemming from their generation gap, the two often disagree on how superheroes should act."
Here's where the series parts company from mainstream anime: The star of the show, Kotetsu, is a past-his-prime, widowed single father in his late thirties struggling to keep up with the younger generation of heroes, specifically his reluctant partner. He is the ONLY reason I watch the show. Period. That's simply how endearing and marvellous the character is.
